The ruins near Palenque, were my first contact with the Mayan culture. This site has been established around 100 BC and lasted till approx 800 AD, with a flourishing time around 700 AD. Than the jungle took it over until it has been rediscovered some 200 years ago. One estimates that merely some 10% of the site have been excavated.
