There is an official "Carretera Panamericana" It starts in Laredo, on the US/Mexican border, and ends some 13000 km further in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

But there is also the "Alaskan Highway" some 2300 km, and the "Inter-American Highway", some 5500 km.

But usually, when talking of the "Panamericana" one means a route from top to bottom of the Americas.

And that is exactly my plan:

I will start in Prudhoe Bay, a lost spot on the northernmost point of Alaska, US, on the Beaufort sea, far North of the Arctic Circle. From there, I will drive South till Ushuaia, Argentina, officially the southernmost city in the world. A first estimate of my route sums up to a scaring 32000km. By experience I know that I should expect to do some 10% more, for different detours, etc. So I can expect a total distance to cover of some 35000 km, almost a full around the world trip......
